Mar. 28–The family of a Colonial Heights police officer killed last year in an errant Chesterfield County police chase has settled a wrongful-death claim for $2.35 million. More than 65 percent of the settlement package involves a $1.54 million structured annuity that will provide for the long-term financial needs of Jessica Sears and her three children, according to family attorney Greg Hooe of the law firm Marks & Harrison. The balance covers attorney fees, miscellaneous costs and a modest lump-sum payment to the family, he said. The settlement, reached in mid-March, comes seven months after Colonial Heights police Lt.
