Jun. 2–SPOTSYLVANIA — A drug manufacturer must supply more information about settlements in wrongful-death lawsuits filed by the families of three heart-surgery patients, a judge ruled yesterday, siding with two newspapers. Spotsylvania County Circuit Judge Ann Hunter Simpson said the settling parties must take additional steps to comply with state law requiring that petitions for wrongful-death settlements “shall state the compromise, its terms and the reasons therefore.” Although she did not specifically say what information a petition should contain, the judge wondered aloud how such a petition could not contain the amount paid to settle a claim.
