The widow of a man killed by anthrax has filed a $50 million wrongful death claim against the government. Maureen Stevens alleges that careless security at Fort Detrick in Maryland may have allowed the theft of a deadly strain of anthrax that killed her husband Robert. Fort Detrick houses the Army’s Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases. Robert Stevens is believed to have inhaled anthrax spores from a tainted letter at the Florida headquarters of a tabloid newspaper. He worked there as a photo editor. His widow wants an autopsy report and other information about her husband’s death. If the government denies the claim, she has six months to file a lawsuit. No one has been arrested in the anthrax investigation. |
