Jan. 30–Police Officer Kenneth Bowers told investigators he was defending a fellow Columbus officer when he shot a man in the back along Renner Road, killing him, on Aug. 21, 2004. But a federal lawsuit filed by the estate of Cameron Straughter calls the shooting an “excessive and unnecessary use of force” against a 21-year-old man who was not a threat to officers. Straughter “was not attacking Bowers or any other person at the time of the shooting, and the shooting was not justified … as (Straughter) was running away from Bowers”… |
